- Coordinating Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association
- Co-founded the journal Statistics and Public Policy and served as its editor
- Co-founded the ASA Sections on National Defense and Homeland Security and on Text Analysis; chaired these and also the sections on Risk Analysis and Statistical Learning and Data Mining

- Served twice on the Board of Directors of the American Statistical Association
- President of the International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics
- Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science
