Academic Achievements
  • His research has received numerous awards, including two IEEE Micro Top Picks papers, an HPCA Best Paper award, as well as MICRO and HPCA Best Paper nominations, an NSF CAREER Award, two IBM Faculty Awards, two Qualcomm Faculty Awards, and a Distinguished Educator Award by the University of Illinois’ Computer Science Department. In teaching, he has been recognized with two Kenneth A. Goldman '71 and one Dorothy and Fred Chau MS'74 College of Engineering teaching awards, a Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Teaching Excellence, thrice as the most influential college educator of a Merrill Presidential Scholar, and as the student-elected 2011 Tau Beta Pi Professor of the Year in the College of Engineering.
Research Experience
  • Currently co-lead PI and a member of the executive leadership of the DARPA/SRC ACE Center for Evolvable Computing and the NSF Science and Technology Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems (CROPPS). Previously, co-founded and was on the executive committee of the Cornell Institute for Digital Agriculture (CIDA), and was co-director of the DARPA/SRC Center for Research in Intelligent Storage and Processing in Memory (CRISP) (2018-2023).

  • Graduated in Computer Science & Engineering ("Licenciado en Informática de Sistemas") in 1996 from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, and earned MS (1999) and Ph.D. (2002) degrees in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He was a member of the steering committees of ISCA and MICRO (both 2020-2023), and in 2017, he chaired the IEEE Computer Society’s Transactions Operating Committee. Before that, he served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Computer Architecture Letters (2013-2016). He was Program Co-chair (with David August) of MICRO 2009, Program Chair of HPCA 2016, and General Co-chair (with José Duato) of ISCA 2020 and 2021.
