- NSF Grant DMS-2010035 (2020-2023) on “Combinatorial and Probabilistic Approaches to Oscillator and Clock Synchronization”
Research Experience
Currently an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and a member of the Institute for Foundations of Data Science. He is also affiliated with the Department of Computer Science at UW-Madison. Previously, he was a Hedrick Assistant Professor at UCLA's Department of Mathematics.
Education
Earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from The Ohio State University in 2018, with David Sivakoff as his thesis advisor; earned a B.S. in mathematics from Seoul National University in South Korea.
Background
Research interests include discrete probability, matrix factorization, and machine learning. His research is broadly driven by questions related to understanding large discrete systems such as interacting particle systems, networks, and structured random matrices.
Miscellany
He is currently organizing the probability seminar at UW-Madison. He is looking for self-motivated Ph.D. students. Interested candidates can send their CV to hlyu@math.wisc.edu.
