- Head of the Environmental Robotics Lab; part of the ETH BiodivX team that advanced as a Finalist in the XPRIZE Rainforest competition; developed a robot combining tether and aerial locomotion to explore forest canopies; Steffen's work was a finalist for Best Paper on Agri-robotics at IROS 2022; collaborated with UZH's SpatialGentics lab to use aerial robots for plant volatile collection and early stress detection in crops; eDrone project for collecting eDNA from tree branches, featured on the cover of Science Robotics.
Background
- SNSF Professor at the Department of Environmental Systems Science. His research addresses the opportunities and challenges brought by robotics with respect to climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainability. Taking inspiration from nature, he studies novel design, manufacturing, perception, and control paradigms to create versatile and robust machines that can explore complex and unpredictable natural environments.
