Academic Achievements
  • Involved in multiple research projects, including ARGO, TerraMax, VIAC, and DEEVA. The ARGO project was the first autonomous vehicle tested on public roads in Italy. TerraMax successfully completed the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and reached the final stage of the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. Organized VIAC in 2010, a 13,000 km test from Milan to Shanghai. Also cooperated in the development of the DEEVA vehicle.
Research Experience
  • Since November 1997, he has held a permanent position and is now an associate professor at the Department of Engineering and Architecture. Involved in various research projects such as the ARGO project (development of a fully automated vehicle), TerraMax perception system (successfully completed the DARPA Grand Challenge), VIAC (a 13,000 km test from Milan to Shanghai), and DEEVA vehicle. Co-founded VisLab srl in 2009, which was acquired by Ambarella Inc. in 2015. Worked at VisLab from 2015 to 2020 on the development of SW and System Integration for the Ambarella CVflow® chip architecture.
Education
  • Received the Dr.Eng. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Parma in 1994, with a Master Thesis on the implementation of Simulation of Petri Nets on the CM-2 Massive Parallel Architecture. From November 1994 to October 1997, he was a PhD student in information technology at the Department of Information Engineering, University of Parma.
Background
  • Research interests: Application of image processing to real-time systems, specifically autonomous driving; optimization of machine code at assembly level; parallel and distributed computing; use of CNN for autonomous driving and industrial inspection.
Miscellany
  • Teaching Information: Courses include Computer Science and Programming Laboratory, Computer Vision, Computer Architectures, Computer Science Basics A, and Computer Science Basics II.
