Academic Achievements
Has published in journals such as New Media & Society, International Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, and Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism. Also written book chapters on digital journalism ethics and journalism education. Her research has received top prizes at ICA and AEJMC annual conferences. Co-editor of a forthcoming volume on communication research on North Korea, titled Locating North Korea in communication research. Working on a monograph on the evolution of digital news practices and news institutions globally. In 2020, co-edited a special issue of International Journal of Communication on North Korea and communication.
Research Experience
Before becoming an academic, she was an award-winning journalist for print and broadcast outlets including BBC Radio, Straits Times, Korea Times, and the Hankyoreh, a progressive newspaper founded by 67,000 citizens in South Korea. She reported from North Korea and covered conflicts in Darfur, Niger Delta, and northern Sri Lanka.

Attended Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Public Policy, and Seoul National University.

Associate Professor of Journalism at Sogang University’s School of Communication. Her research focuses on how journalism is evolving in a globalizing world, and how news institutions and journalists are responding to this evolution.
