Academic Achievements
  • Has published in journals such as New Media & Society, International Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, and Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism. Also written book chapters on digital journalism ethics and journalism education. Her research has received top prizes at ICA and AEJMC annual conferences. Co-editor of a forthcoming volume on communication research on North Korea, titled Locating North Korea in communication research. Working on a monograph on the evolution of digital news practices and news institutions globally. In 2020, co-edited a special issue of International Journal of Communication on North Korea and communication.
Research Experience
  • Before becoming an academic, she was an award-winning journalist for print and broadcast outlets including BBC Radio, Straits Times, Korea Times, and the Hankyoreh, a progressive newspaper founded by 67,000 citizens in South Korea. She reported from North Korea and covered conflicts in Darfur, Niger Delta, and northern Sri Lanka.
