Academic Achievements
  • Elected ACM Fellow in 2008 for contributions to theorem provers and verification techniques.
  • Elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society in 2017. Received the Herbrand Award for Distinguished Contributions to Automated Reasoning in the same year.
Research Experience
  • 1980s: Research on LCF-style theorem proving introduced concepts such as conversions and theorem continuations, which are still mainstays of the HOL theorem prover. Helped design the programming language Standard ML and wrote one of the main textbooks, ML for the Working Programmer.
  • 1986: Isabelle appeared and was later developed in collaboration with Tobias Nipkow and his colleagues at the Technical University of Munich. Currently Distinguished Affiliated Professor for Logic in Informatics at TUM.
  • 1990s: Isabelle found a worldwide user community. Investigated the mechanization of induction and recursion and their duals, coinduction and corecursion.
  • Early 2000s: Formalized deep results of set theory, including the reflection theorem and the relative consistency of the axiom of choice. In 2013, completed the first machine-assisted formalisation of Gödel's second incompleteness theorem.
Background
  • Research interests include automated theorem proving and its applications, particularly the development of Isabelle with emphasis on automation, formalizing mathematics, developing MetiTarski, an automatic prover for the elementary functions, and proving the correctness of security protocols.
Miscellany
  • Retired, unable to take on new PhD students. Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, responsible for admitting and supervising Computer Science students. Served long-term as an editor of the Journal of Automated Reasoning and on the Programme Committees of numerous conferences.
